Thousands of people protested against the “anti-migrant” security decree , proposed by Interior Minister and leader of the League, Matteo Salvini , in central Rome on Saturday. These protesters, activists from the radical left or associations gathered from fifty or so cities throughout Italy, marched to say “no to Salvini and racism”.
The Italian Senate voted on Wednesday on this highly controversial decree-law, the first step before a final vote in the Chamber of Deputies, expected at the end of November. The law would replace the humanitarian residence permits, currently granted to 25 percent of asylum seekers for a period of two years, by various other permits, such as one for “special protection”, for a period of one year, or natural disasters, for a period of six months, among others.
