Quim Torra, secessionist, elected President of Catalonia

Monday, 14 May, 2018 - 15:55

The Catalan parliament on Monday elected Catalonia’s president as the separatist candidate chosen by the exiled Carles Puigdemont, Quim Torra, who promised to continue to “build an independent state” of Spain.

“We will make the Catalan Republic,” said the 55-year-old publisher.

“We will be faithful to the mandate of the referendum of self-determination of October 1st: to build an independent State, a Republic”, he promised before the vote.

On October 1, more than two million Catalans (out of a total of 5.5 million voters) took part in the referendum banned by Madrid and which the police tried to prevent. According to the organisers, 90 percent voted for independence.

Quim Torra must now form a government, which will automatically lift the direct rule imposed by Madrid on this region of 7.5 million inhabitants when the separatist deputies proclaimed independence on October 27, 2017.

Torra promised during the first inaugural debate on Saturday to facilitate the return to power of Carles Puigdemont, who he calls the “the legitimate president”.

Puigdemont, who left Spain before being charged with rebellion, is on bail in Germany where a court must rule on his extradition.

The leader of the opposition to the separatists Inés Arrimadas harshly attacked the “xenophobic and identity discourses” of the candidate, described as “puppet of Puigdemont”.

She denounced Torra’s the anti-Spanish writings, in which he notably labelled those who do not defend the Catalan culture and language “scavengers, vipers and hyenas”.

The conservative government of Mariano Rajoy said that it could at any time regain control of the region if Quim Torra violated the Constitution.

Carles Puigdemont said Saturday in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Stampa that his successor designate “takes power in temporary conditions and he is aware of it. From October 27, he will be able to call new elections.”
