Russia expels 60 US diplomats in tit-for-tat response to Skripal poisoning case

vendredi, 30 mars, 2018 - 14:32

Moscow has announced the expulsion of 60 US diplomats in response to the Washington’s decision to expel an equal number of Russian diplomats over the Skripal poisoning case.

The closure of the US consulate in St. Petersburg will also be closed in response to the closure of the Russian one in Seattle.

« US Ambassador Jon Huntsman has been invited to our ministry, where my Deputy Sergei Ryabkov is discussing the response measures to the US, including the expulsion of diplomats, » said Lavrov

Meanwhile there has been a sudden improvement, despite the predictions, in the condition of Yulia Skripal, the 33-year-old daughter of former Russian spy Sergei.

« She is improving rapidly and is no longer in critical condition, » said a source from the British hospital where she is being cared for along with her father. The conditions of the woman « are now stable », said Christine Blanshard, health director of the Salisbury District Hospital, adding that her father Sergei remains in critical yet stable, and therefore not yet out of danger.

« I am pleased to report an improvement in the condition of Yulia Skripal, who has responded well to treatment, but continues to receive specialist clinical care 24 hours a day, » Dr. Blanshard said. « I want to take this opportunity to thank the hospital staff once again for guaranteeing such a high level of quality of care to these patients in recent weeks, they are very proud of our teams who have worked in the front line and of all those who gave them support ».

The unexpected improvement of Yulia Skripal is likely to rekindle the suspicions in the Russian government, which has repeatedly asked in vain to give consular assistance to the woman and visit her in hospital.
